2. The person to whom a Valentine is sent
valentine [lentain]
Several stories are told about the origin of Saint Valentines Day. One legend dates as far as the days of the Roman Empire. According to the story, Claudius, the Emperor of Rome, wanted to increase the size of his army. He knew that it would be easier to get young men who were not married to join. Therefore he made a rule that no young man could marry until he had served a certain number of years in the army.
A priest named Valentine broke the rule and secretly married a great many young people. Finally, Claudius found out about Valentine and put the priest in prison, where he remained until his death on Feb.14.
After his death, Valentine was made a saint, and the day of his death was named Saint Valentines Day. It became the custom for lovers to send each other messages on this day. Now Saint Valentines Day is a time for people to send one another greetings of many kinds.
February 14, Valentines Day, is sweet hearts day, on which people in love with each other express their tender emotions. People sometimes put their love messages in a heart-shaped box of chocalates, or a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbons. Words or letters may be written on the flower-covered cards, or something else. Whatever the form may be, the message is almost the same:“Will you be my valentine?”
Another story has it that while Valentine was in prison waiting for his fate, he came in contact with his jailor, Asterius. The jailor had a blind daughter. Asterius requested him to heal his daughter. Through his faith he miraculously restored the sight of Asterius daughter and fell in love with her. Just before he was put to death, he asked for a pen and paper from his jailor, and signed a farewell message to her “From Your Valentine”, a phrase that lived ever after.
Another valentine gentleman you may be wondering about is Cupid (Latin,“desire”). In Roman mythology Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often said to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love.
It is an old English custom to send a message or card to the person you love on St. Valentines Day. Here are some samples:

I think it would have to be courage,
With it you can face all changes, all losses,
All failure even loneliness—
And build anew and more strongly than before.

The day is observed with exchanges of love notes and cards, and other tokens of affection, called valentines. The symbols of the heart and Cupid are common in cards, decorations of store windows, candies and other paraphernalia.
Traditional valentines were frillysweet, and tender affairs made of red and white paper and lace with cutoutsand cupids. The custom of sending cards, giving candy, and other such tokens has caught a great deal of commercial enthusiasm.

Valentines Day February 14 St. Valentines Day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages. One of the earliest popular symbols of the day is Cupidthe Roman god of love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow. Three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ, the Roman emperors still demanded that everyone believe in the Roman gods. Valentine, a Christian priest, had been thrown in prison for his teachings. On February 14, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he was a Christian, but also because he had performed a miracle. He supposedly cured the jailers daughter of her blindness. The night before he was executed, he wrote the jailers daughter a farewell letter, signing it "From Your Valentine." Another legend tells us that this same Valentine, well-loved by all, received notes to his jail cell from children and friends who missed him. Another Valentine was an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time, AD 200. He was imprisoned because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman emperor. Some legends say he was burned at the stake.
February 14 was also a Roman holiday, held in honor of a goddess. Young men randomly chose the name of a young girl to escort to the festivities. The custom of choosing a sweetheart on this date spread through Europe in the Middle Ages, and then to the early American colonies. Throughout the ages, people also believed that birds picked their mates on February 14! In AD 496 Sain Pope Gelasius I named February 14 as "Valentines Day". Although its not an official holiday, most Americans observe this day. Whatever the odd mixture of origins, St. Valentines Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day that you show your friend or loved one that you care. You can send candy to someone you think is special. Or you can send roses, the flower of love. Most people send "valentines," a greeting card named after the notes that St. Valentine received in jail. Valentines can be sentimental, romantic and heartfelt. They can be funny and friendly. If the sender is shy, valentines can be anonymous. Americans of all ages love to send and receive valentines. Handmade valentines created by cutting hearts out of colored paper, show that a lot of thought was put into making them personal. Valentines can be heart-shaped, or have hearts, the symbol of love, on them. In elementary schools children make valentines for their classmates and put them in a large decorated box, similar to a mailbox. On February 14, the teacher opens the box and distributes the valentines to each student. After the students read their valentines they have a small party with refreshments. For teenagers and adults, major newspapers throughout the country have a Valentines Day offer. Anyone can send in a message, for a small fee of course, destined for a would-be sweetheart, a good friend, an acquaintance or even a spouse of fifty years. The message is printed in a special section of the newspaper on February.
every february, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of st. valentine. but who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? the history of valentines day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery.
but we do know that february has long been a month of romance. st. valentines day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both christian and ancient roman tradition. so, who was saint valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? today, the catholic church recognizes at least three different saints named valentine or valentinus, all of whom were martyred.february 14 is valentines day. it is celebrated as a lovers holiday today, with the giving of candy, flowers, or other gifts between couples in love. valentines day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages.in rome its said that it originated in 5th century as a tribute to st. valentine, a catholic bishop.
for eight hundred years prior to the establishment of valentines day, the romans had practiced a pagan celebration in mid-february commemorating young mens rite of passage to the god lupercus. the celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. the girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his female companion during the remaining year.in an effort to do away with the pagan festival, pope gelasius ordered a slight change in the lottery. instead of the names of young women, the box would contain the names of saints. both men and women were allowed to draw from the box, and the game was to emulate the ways of the saint they drew during the rest of the year. needless to say, many of the young roman men were not too pleased with the rule changes.
instead of the pagan god lupercus, the church looked for a suitable patron saint of love to take his place. they found an appropriate choice in valentine, who, in ad270 had been beheaded 3 by emperor claudius. claudius had determined that married men made poor soldiers. so he banned marriage from his empire. but valentine would secretly marry young men that came to him.when claudius found out about valentine, he first tried to convert him to paganism. but valentine reversed the strategy, trying instead to convert claudius. when he failed, he was stoned and beheaded.
during the days that valentine was imprisoned, he fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer. his love for her, and his great faith, managed to miraculously heal her from her blindness before his death. before he was taken to his death, he signed a farewell message to her, "from your valentine." the phrase has been used on his day ever since.although the lottery for women had been banned by the church, the mid-february holiday in commemoration of st. valentine was stilled used by roman men to seek the affection of women .it became a tradition for the men to give the ones they admired handwritten messages of affection, containing valentines name.another valentine was an italian bishop who lived at about the same time, ad 200.he was imprisoned because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the roman emperor. some legends say he was burned at the stake.february 14 was also a roman holiday, held in honor of a goddess. young men andomly chose the name of a young girl to escort to the festivities. the custom of choosing a sweetheart on this date spread through europe in the middle ages, and then to the early american colonies. throughout the ages, people also believed that birds picked their mates on february 14!
in ad 496 saint pope gelasius i named february 14 as "valentines day". although its not an official holiday, most americans observe this day. the first valentine card grew out of this practice. the first true valentine card was sent in 1415 by charles, duke of orleans, to his wife. he was imprisoned in the tower of london at the time.cupid, another symbol of the holiday, became associated with it because he was the son of venus, the roman god of love and beauty. he is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow. cupid often appears on valentine cards.
whatever the odd mixture of origins, st. valentines day is now a day for sweethearts. it is the day that you show your friend or loved one that you care. you can send candy to someone you think is special. or you can send roses, the flower of love.

Saint Valentines Day, also known as Valentines Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine,is observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a holiday in most of them.
St. Valentines Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus.
Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies.A popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted
under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer,
Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell. Today, Saint Valentines Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion,as well as in the Lutheran Church. The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valentines Day, albeit on July 6 and July 30, the former date in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Valentine, and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna (modern Terni). In Brazil, the Dia de So Valentim is recognized on June 12.
The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as"valentines"). Valentines Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

Good morning everyone, it’s my honor to stand here to make a speech. And I want to introduce something about Valentine’s Day to you.
It is known to us all, Valentine’s Day is on February 14th and it is a traditional festival in west, but now it is popular with all of us. As far as I know, most of you would like to celebrate the festival, but I want to tell you something in detail about it.
First of all, let me tell you the origin of the festival. In fact, there are many legends about the origination of the Valentine’s Day. For the time is limited, I choose only one of them to tell you in brief. In Britain, birds tend to show their love to their lovers on 14th in February. As the result, people consider the day as the young life’s beginning and the day about love. Therefore, people try to imitate the behavior of the birds. That is the reason why the day is called Valentine’s Day.
What’s more, there is something which has to do with the Valentine’s Day. That is rose.
Firstly, roses are good presents on Valentine’s Day. And different colors of the roses stand for different meanings. Pink roses mean that the person you send the present to be you first love. Red roses mean that you love the one you send present to be the one you love now. Orange roses mean that you say” You are beautiful.” to your lover. And the white roses mean you respect your lover. Secondly, the number of the roses you
decide to send to your lover has different meaning. One rose means “Only you”; two roses mean “There are only two of us in the world.” There roses mean “I love you.” 99 roses mean “Forever”. 100 roses mean “100% love”. And 108 roses mean “Would you marry me?”
In addition, people from different counties may do different things on this day.
In America, people always like to post cards to their lovers. And even some young people may post a piece of message on the newspaper to show his or her love to the one he or she loves.
In England, people tend to celebrate the day with a big romantic dinner. And during the dinner they will send roses to their love.
In Australia, people often send purple shell to their lovers for that they believe it stand for loyal and steadfast.
Nowadays in China, there are more and more people celebrating the festival. Just like people in western counties, we also send roses or chocolates to our lovers. Maybe there will also be a date and a big meal.
Finally, if you are a single noble, try to catch your happiness as soon as possible. And if you already have a soul partner, wish you be together forever. Thank you.
